Joseph J. Shema

Joseph J. Shema, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away on August 3, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on May 23, 1938, in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, Joseph dedicated his life to education, working as a K-8 teacher for the Oakland Public Schools, where he inspired countless students over his esteemed career.

Joseph is survived by his devoted wife of almost 67 years, Gladys (Hakim) Shema; his sons, Joseph Shema and wife Cheryl, and Alan Shema and wife Jamie; his daughters, Terri Roedel and husband Mike and Elaine Shema and husband Allyn Muschko. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren: Alyssa Shema and husband William Newman, Alex Shema and wife Taelor, Christopher Roedel, Samantha Roedel, Reese Shema, and Dylan Shema, as well as his great-grandchildren Alex Jr. and Audrey Shema, and Lily Newman.

Joseph is predeceased by his parents, George and Pearl Shema and brother Reverend George Shema. Joseph is survived by his siblings, Dolores Klocek and husband Philip, and Rose Cole and her partner Richard Dellagiacoma.

Joseph was known for his varied interests, including a passion for stock car racing, which brought him and Gladys joy and excitement over the years. He enjoyed spending his leisure time at the casino, where he appreciated the thrill of chance. An avid do-it-yourselfer, Joseph took pride in tackling various home improvement projects, and he often found relaxation in solving puzzle books, resting in the hot tub, and watching YouTube videos.

Joseph will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was a dedicated supporter of St. Jude's Children's Hospital. In honor of his life and commitment, donations may be made to the organization in lieu of flowers.
