Joan M. Herkomer, 79, of Oakland, NJ passed away on Monday, February 19, 2018 at home surrounded by her loving family. Joan was born in New York City, New York to Peter and Rose Majuk on November 25, 1938. In 1959 she moved to Miami, FL where she met the love of her life, Arthur. Joan and Art married in 1962 and 3 years later moved to Oakland, NJ where they have resided for the past 50 years. Through the years Joan worked as a legal secretary, realtor and paralegal. Joan retired in 2004 as the Senior Executive Assistant to the Corporate General Counsel at The Hertz Corporation. Joan was an active member of her parish at OLPH church as a eucharistic minister. In 1998 Joan became a founding member and facilitator of the women's spirituality group - The Circle of Light, which continues to this day. Joan was also an active member of the Austin Healy Sports and Touring Club for over 30 years. Joan was a kind, warm hearted, intelligent and giving person that never asked for anything for herself. She was an amazing mother and grandmother who gave all her love and attention to make everyone's life as happy and easy as possible. She shared her talents and unconditional love with all. A true beauty inside and out. She is predeceased by her parents Peter and Rose Majuk and sister Jean M. Werdann. Joan is survived by her husband Art of 55 years, her two loving daughters Lori and her husband David Gilmour, and Kristine and her husband Nick Van Ness, and her five grandchildren Audrey and Shea Gilmour and Nicholas, Julia and Kileigh Van Ness. Visitation will be held at Oakland Memorial Home on Thursday, February 22nd from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Franklin Avenue in Oakland on Friday, February 23rd at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Christ the King Cemetery in Franklin Lakes, NJ. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Generation Rescue (generationrescue.org) which is dedicated to children on the Autism Spectrum.
