Anthony M. Cassera, a longtime resident of Ringwood, New Jersey, died Saturday at the age of 82.
The defining force in his life was his wife, Maria, whom he met as a teenager. Their love story spanned over 60 years until her passing in 2024. She was his North Star and the foundation of the life they built together.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Anthony showed an early aptitude for mathematics and problem-solving, later attending Brooklyn Technical High School and, ultimately, Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He went on to build a successful career in electrical engineering, earning respect for his technical precision and disciplined approach. His intellectual curiosity endured throughout his life, as evidenced by his continued work on complex mathematical concepts long after his formal education.
In Ringwood, Tony and Maria created a home that reflected both his craftsmanship and his connection to the land. He took pride in building and maintaining their homestead, a place that served as both a personal retreat and a reflection of his appreciation for the natural surroundings. He developed a deep attachment to the area and its landscape, and was an active member of the Skyline Lakes Association.
Outside of his profession, Anthony devoted much of his time to a wide range of pursuits, particularly those outdoors. An avid fisherman, he could often be found at the Monksville Reservoir in the spring and looked forward to winters cold enough for ice fishing. Being an engineer, he especially enjoyed mastering the technical skills required for fly fishing and had a very robust collection of intricate flies waiting for his next outing.
Tony traveled extensively (most happily by train) from Alaska to Mexico City, exploring so many of the national parks during many cross- country adventures. He also had a passion for food and took great pride in creating a tightly curated set of his own signature dishes, bringing the same precision and curiosity to the things he loved to make, like his cheesecake.
He was also an earnest amateur radio operator, serving as current president of the Ramapo Mountain Radio Association. Through voice and Morse code, he connected with ham radio operators across the globe, including as far as Australia.
In addition to his late wife, he is survived by his sons, Stephen and Michael; his sister, Marilyn; his brother, Michael; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Anthony will be remembered for his intellect, passion for all things outdoors and his enduring dedication to his wife and family.
