Mildred Goelz (Millie) 89 was born on January 25, 1926 to Catherine and Joseph Miller. She was baptized, made her Communion and Confirmation at St. Anne's in the Heights section of Jersey City. She grew up in Jersey City , and after Dickenson High School, she joined the United Photo Finishing Plant, where she met her wonderful husband to be, Raymond Goelz. While there she was secretary to the owner of the plant. After two years, she worked at Wyeth Pharmaceutical Company at Harborside in Jersey City. She was married on May 8, 1948. Later she became pregnant and had a beautiful daughter named Kathanne, who was a treasure to her for all her years. When Millie moved to Oakland in 1958, she lived next door to Gertrude Shutz, who was the founder of the Oakland Garden Club. Gertrude asked her to join the garden club, which she did and Millie then formed the Oakland Junior Garden Club for children. In 1959, she joined the Ladies Auxiliary of the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department. In 1961, she began to work for the Oakland Board of Education as school secretary, a career that lasted for 30 years as Victor Rabasca's secretary. Millie was also a member of the Oakland Blood Bank, the secretary for the Young at Heart Club, and a member of the Oakland Senior Citizen's Club. In 1974, she was blessed with a wonderful son-in-law named James Hans. After a few years, she was blessed again with the birth of two wonderful grandchildren, James Raymond better known as J.R. and Kathryn Annemarie better known as Katie. The circle is now complete with the birth of her "Angel from Heaven above", her great-grandson James Hans, born from the marriage of her grandson J.R., and granddaughter in-law Kristina. Her joys included her great grandbaby James, shopping, going on trips anywhere, writing, making friends everywhere she went, always being the best dressed, activities with the senior club, including of course Atlantic City. Her notable memories included refusing to kiss Frank Sinatra, "Millie's Spaghetti", Drinky-poos, would the girl behind the red-head please stand-up, being on the dance floor, family vacations to Cape Code, camping, and being known as Thoroughly Modern Millie. Millie always felt blessed to have such a full and loving life. She returned to God's loving arms on Wednesday, November 25, 2015. She will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
